Mixed Weekend For MLS Against European Opposition

by David Wilson on July 19, 2010

HDR1 - Qwest Field, Seattle Sounders (fisheye)It was a mixed weekend for Major League Soccer as the Seattle Sounders lost to Celtic 2-1, while the San Jose Earthquakes drew 0-0 with Spurs.

The Earthquakes versus Tottenham game was played in front of a record capacity crowd of 10,712 at Buck Shaw Stadium, and the fans saw plenty of action, if not any goals, as both teams combined for 31 shots on goal.

San Jose was by far the better team, forcing Spurs goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini to make six saves, including two in the final three minutes as Spurs looked like they were still suffering from jet lag.

2010 MLS Preview: SJ Earthquakes

by The Yank on March 16, 2010

Stick Figure in PerilThe Side: The San Jose Earthquakes couldn’t climb very far out of the league’s basement last year and are thanking their lucky stars (all one or two of them) that there is no relegation from the top of the American soccer pyramid. The most frustrating thing about their year was that they seemed to actually take a step backward. This franchise has won a Supporters Shield and two MLS Cups, but their “hiatus” has hampered them. Sure helped Houston though!

Seattle Sounders Season Tickets capped at 32,000

by David Wilson on January 27, 2010

Yes that is not a typo. The Seattle Sounders have announced that less than 1,000 season tickets remain for the 2010 season. The 18-match season-ticket package includes 15 regular season matches and three international friendlies to be played on the Xbox Pitch at Qwest Field.

“Our fans demonstrated their passion and commitment to the team by creating one of the best home field advantages in all the MLS,” said Sounders FC owner Joe Roth. “They took their match day role very seriously and renewed their season tickets at a 96 percent rate.”

MLS 101: San Jose Earthquakes Edition

by The Yank on February 24, 2009

The San Jose Earthquakes returned to MLS last season and played pretty poorly. They had taken a two year “hiatus” during which their former players won back to back titles in Houston. While that fact would royally piss me off if I were a Quakes fan, they still have some good memories of the trophies they won during the pre-hiatus years.

The Quakes were known as the Clash for their first four seasons, but during that period the team floundered. They switched to the Earthquakes in 2000 and their results immediately improved. They won the 2001 and 2003 MLS Cups and won the Supporters Shield in 2005, which would unfortunately be their final season in San Jose.

San Jose Earthquakes Sign Bobby Convey

by David Wilson on February 10, 2009

The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the team has signed United States National Team midfielder Bobby Convey, who was recently released by Reading.

“It is rare to be able to acquire a U.S. international in the prime of his career,” said General Manager of Soccer Operations John Doyle. “When he became available we jumped at the opportunity to add him to our team. He is a great attacking player who will make an immediate impact, and our fans will enjoy watching him.”

2008 MLS Season Review: San Jose Earthquakes

by The Yank on December 13, 2008

Recap: Any time your team is on the bottom of the league table (tied with the Galaxy), it’s bad. But, SJE fans know there is a learning curve in MLS, and they will look to catch up to their competitors in 2009. Huckerby’s addition helped a bundle and they made a late run, but it was still too early for SJE. They get a D+ overall.

Offense: What could you expect? Really? SJE did about as well as possible, but still only notched 32 goals, barely more than one a game. They were the worst in the league by far. Huckerby rejuvenated the attack, but he was alone in his proficiency, so the squad gets an F for offense. Sorry Quakes’ fans, but it’s true.

MLS Playoff Push: The Pushover Edition

by The Yank on October 10, 2008

I was going to write a full post about each team’s playoff chances, but its getting close to game time and the three teams left (Toronto, San Jose and LA)…

Well, let’s just say I don’t need to delve too deeply into analysis to discover these teams probably are not going to make it. The Sounders have a better chance of qualifying than a couple of these teams.

The Sheriff of San Jose: Darren Huckerby

by The Yank on September 10, 2008

The Sheriff of Nottingham was a nasty dude. He was always trying to stop Robin Hood from robbing the rich to feed the poor. He was not well liked by his people.

The Sheriff of San Jose, Darren Huckerby, is not a nasty dude. However, he is a bloke from Nottingham who has been besting the richer MLS squads in order to keep his poor squad’s playoff chances alive. He is very, very well liked by Earthquakes‘ supporters.

And he should be.
