The San Jose Earthquakes returned to MLS last season and played pretty poorly. They had taken a two year “hiatus” during which their former players won back to back titles in Houston. While that fact would royally piss me off if I were a Quakes fan, they still have some good memories of the trophies they won during the pre-hiatus years.
The Quakes were known as the Clash for their first four seasons, but during that period the team floundered. They switched to the Earthquakes in 2000 and their results immediately improved. They won the 2001 and 2003 MLS Cups and won the Supporters Shield in 2005, which would unfortunately be their final season in San Jose.

The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the team has signed United States National Team midfielder Bobby Convey, who was recently released by Reading.
“It is rare to be able to acquire a U.S. international in the prime of his career,” said General Manager of Soccer Operations John Doyle. “When he became available we jumped at the opportunity to add him to our team. He is a great attacking player who will make an immediate impact, and our fans will enjoy watching him.”

Recap: Any time your team is on the bottom of the league table (tied with the Galaxy), it’s bad. But, SJE fans know there is a learning curve in MLS, and they will look to catch up to their competitors in 2009. Huckerby’s addition helped a bundle and they made a late run, but it was still too early for SJE. They get a D+ overall.
Offense: What could you expect? Really? SJE did about as well as possible, but still only notched 32 goals, barely more than one a game. They were the worst in the league by far. Huckerby rejuvenated the attack, but he was alone in his proficiency, so the squad gets an F for offense. Sorry Quakes’ fans, but it’s true.

I was going to write a full post about each team’s playoff chances, but its getting close to game time and the three teams left (Toronto, San Jose and LA)…
Well, let’s just say I don’t need to delve too deeply into analysis to discover these teams probably are not going to make it. The Sounders have a better chance of qualifying than a couple of these teams.

The Sheriff of Nottingham was a nasty dude. He was always trying to stop Robin Hood from robbing the rich to feed the poor. He was not well liked by his people.
The Sheriff of San Jose, Darren Huckerby, is not a nasty dude. However, he is a bloke from Nottingham who has been besting the richer MLS squads in order to keep his poor squad’s playoff chances alive. He is very, very well liked by Quakes’ supporters.
And he should be.

The Columbus Crew were the only Eastern Conference team to win and by doing so moved to the top of the division and the MLS overall table to round out Week 23 of the Major League season.
LA Galaxy 2 New England Revolution 2
Landon Donovan scored a pair of goals for the Los Angeles Galaxy, but Shalrie Joseph’s first goal of the season helped the New England Revolution grab a 2-2 tie.
Joseph’s goal in the 71st minute helped New England (11-6-5) extend the Galaxy’s (6-9-7) winless streak to 10.

Limited schedule ion Major League Soccer this weekend with the bog shock occurring on Dallas where FC Dallas hammered Beckham and the Galaxy 4-0 in front of a sell-out crowd.
FC Dallas 4, LA Galaxy 0
After going winless in MLS play since mid-June, FC Dallas finally decided enough was enough. Kenny Cooper scored twice in the first 17 minutes, Dominic Oduro scored his fifth goal of the season and Abe Thompson came off the bench to add another tally as FC Dallas blasted the Los Angeles Galaxy, 4-0, at Pizza Hut Park.

This weekend was a weekend of ties in Major League Soccer with the four games all ending up deadlocked.
New York 2 LA Galaxy 2
David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy needed a goal in extra time to tie the New York Red Bulls 2-2 on Saturday night before 46,754 fans, the largest crowd for a single Major League Soccer game this season.
It appeared as if Juan Pablo Angel’s goal in the 71st minute was going to be the game-winner for the Red Bulls. But the Galaxy’s Landon Donovan knocked in a bending shot in the 92nd minute for the game-tying score. It was his league-leading 12th goal of the season.

Recap of this weekend’s games in Major League Soccer which saw two MLS shown red cards.
Earthquakes 1, Colorado 1
Ryan Johnson’s second-half goal broke a long scoring drought for the last place San Jose Earthquakes, but Conor Casey scored minutes later to lift the Colorado Rapids into a 1-1 tie Saturday.
Johnson ended the Earthquake’s 281-minute scoreless run in the 62nd minute for San Jose (3-10-3), winless in six matches.
The physical and defensive match featured only two corner kicks, seven shots and six yellow cards, all in the second half. San Jose coach Frank Yallop was ejected for arguing against Casey’s goal. The Rapids (6-8-2) broke a five-game losing streak on the road. San Jose has an MLS-low 11 goals this season.

I turned on Sky Sports this morning and the lead headline was that the New England Revolutuon had beaten David Beckham and the L.A. Galaxy 2-1 in a battle of the top teams in MLS. I must admit, I almost fell of my chair when I saws the headline.
Here are the game summaries from this week’s MLS games.
New England 2, Los Angeles 1
Adam Cristman scored two goals as the New England Revolution held on for a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Friday. Cristman opened the scoring with an unassisted tally in the 33rd minute and then doubled the advantage four minutes later with his career-high sixth goal of the season to give the Revolution a 2-0 advantage.
