LA Galaxy

It was always going to be an interesting game. David Beckham’s first game of the season against the team he played for this winter. Would the Galaxy fans embrace Beckham or would they be upset at how he treated them and MLS this winter?

From the banners around the sold-out Home Depot Center it was pretty apparent before kick-off how the Galaxy fans felt. When Beckham’s name was announced there were more boos than cheers.

And LA’s Riot Squad continued to boo Beckham ever time he touched the ball and held aloft signs reading ‘Go Home Fraud’ and ‘23: Repent’ in reference to his shirt number.

David beckhamThe return of David Beckham to Major League Soccer might have grabbed the headlines, but the real story is that the LA Galaxy (6-3-9) have won four straight MLS games for the first time since September-October 2007 and is fighting for a playoff berth. The Galaxy had not won at New York since 2000.

The Galaxy opened the scoring in the 3rd minute when Alecko Eskandarian’s left-footed volley beat Red Bulls goalkeeper Danny Cepero. Landon Donovan doubled the score in the 31st minute and Eddie Lewis gave LA a three goal cushion before half-time.

David Beckham is back in LA and attending Galaxy games, so that means that the high-noon showdown between Landon Donovan and David Beckham is nearing.

For those of you who missed the first barb in this exchange, Donovan questioned Beckham’s commitment to the club and also the Major Soccer League in a book coming out Tuesday.

Donovan is quoted in the book saying:

English newspapers today are reporting that Chris Birchall is heading to LA this week as be contemplates a move to the LA Galaxy.

Chris why you ask? Well Birchall is 25 and is a midfielder who plays for Brighton. He is available as he is a free agent this summer as Brighton decided not to renew his contract.

What do you think Galaxy fans. Is this the kind of move that will jumpstart your season?

MLS to get $10M for Beckham

by David Wilson

SI is reporting that Major League Soccer will receive $10 million for its agreement to extend David Beckham’s loan to AC Milan through the end of the season.

“We asked for $10 million, we got our $10 million,” MLS commissioner Don Garber said on Thursday.

The big question is how much of that $10 million was paid by Beckham himself. On this topic Garber was coy:

“We don’t know where it’s coming from, either. There’s a lot of different ways it could happen,” he said. “He can not get paid from Milan. Milan could pay us. He could pay them. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter.”

Landon Rescues LA Galaxy

by David Wilson

Landon Donovan scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-2 tie with D.C. United on Sunday in the MLS opener for both teams. Christian Gomez and Chris Pontius scored for D.C. United, which built a 2-0 lead after 62 minutes before Donovan brought his team all the way back.

“Landon is going to get better,” Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said. “His fitness has to get better and he has to get a little sharper on the ball. But over the next month or so, we expect Landon really to get into good form.”

A look at the Beckham deal

by David Wilson

David BeckhamThere has been a lot written about the “timeshare”  arrangement between the LA Galaxy and AC Milan for the services of a certain David Beckham. The deals and sub-deals are confusing but I will try to explain it as best I can.

Basically AC Milan agreed to pay MLS $1 million to extend the current two-month loan until the end of the season. In addition Beckham paid $3 million himself to continue the loan deal paid and an exhibition game between the Galaxy and AC Milan was arranged for July 19th. Milan were already scheduled to tour the US this summer and had three games scheduled. What they did was extend the tour by one game. In addition to the Galaxy game, AC Milan are rumored to be playing Chelsea in Baltimore in July.

BeckhamDavid Beckham will stay at AC Milan until the end of the season after a ‘timeshare’ deal was finally agreed with Los Angeles Galaxy. The 33-year-old former England captain will then rejoin LA Galaxy for several months, before returning to Milan at the end of the year.

Beckham was scheduled to return to Galaxy on March 9, but wants to make a permanent move to the San Siro. It is understood he has agreed a salary cut to ensure the move goes ahead.

The Galaxy are officially the laughingstock of MLS today. Despite receiving what I consider to be outright favoritism from the league (AEG basically stole Donovan for them, imagine the NFL taking Adrian Peterson and gifting him to the New York Giants), they finished with the league’s worst record last year. David Beckham has not been the savior of American soccer, as promised. But things have not always been so bleak in LA.

In fact, other than DC United, the Galaxy are probably the most successful MLS side ever. They have won two MLS Cups (2002, 2005), two Supporters Shields (1998, 2002) and two US Open Cups (2001, 2005). They are also the only team other than DC to win the CONCACAF Champion’s League. Their success was attributable to their great players.
