English newspapers today are reporting that Chris Birchall is heading to LA this week as be contemplates a move to the LA Galaxy.
Chris why you ask? Well Birchall is 25 and is a midfielder who plays for Brighton. He is available as he is a free agent this summer as Brighton decided not to renew his contract.
What do you think Galaxy fans. Is this the kind of move that will jumpstart your season?
“We asked for $10 million, we got our $10 million,” MLS commissioner Don Garber said on Thursday.
The big question is how much of that $10 million was paid by Beckham himself. On this topic Garber was coy:
“We don’t know where it’s coming from, either. There’s a lot of different ways it could happen,” he said. “He can not get paid from Milan. Milan could pay us. He could pay them. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter.”
Landon Donovan scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 2-2 tie with D.C. United on Sunday in the MLS opener for both teams. Christian Gomez and Chris Pontius scored for D.C. United, which built a 2-0 lead after 62 minutes before Donovan brought his team all the way back.
“Landon is going to get better,” Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said. “His fitness has to get better and he has to get a little sharper on the ball. But over the next month or so, we expect Landon really to get into good form.”
There has been a lot written about the “timeshare” arrangement between the LA Galaxy and AC Milan for the services of a certain David Beckham. The deals and sub-deals are confusing but I will try to explain it as best I can.
Basically AC Milan agreed to pay MLS $1 million to extend the current two-month loan until the end of the season. In addition Beckham paid $3 million himself to continue the loan deal paid and an exhibition game between the Galaxy and AC Milan was arranged for July 19th. Milan were already scheduled to tour the US this summer and had three games scheduled. What they did was extend the tour by one game. In addition to the Galaxy game, AC Milan are rumored to be playing Chelsea in Baltimore in July.
David Beckham will stay at AC Milan until the end of the season after a ‘timeshare’ deal was finally agreed with Los Angeles Galaxy. The 33-year-old former England captain will then rejoin LA Galaxy for several months, before returning to Milan at the end of the year.
Beckham was scheduled to return to Galaxy on March 9, but wants to make a permanent move to the San Siro. It is understood he has agreed a salary cut to ensure the move goes ahead.
The Galaxy are officially the laughingstock of MLS today. Despite receiving what I consider to be outright favoritism from the league (AEG basically stole Donovan for them, imagine the NFL taking Adrian Peterson and gifting him to the New York Giants), they finished with the league’s worst record last year. David Beckham has not been the savior of American soccer, as promised. But things have not always been so bleak in LA.
Former LA Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas said he would not be surprised if David Beckham were not to return to America after his loan with AC Milan. The England midfielder’s stint with the Italian club ends in March, when the Major League Soccer season resumes.
Lalas, who in 2007 signed Beckham on a five-year contract with the Galaxy, told BBC Radio 5 Live:
“If I was still at the Galaxy, yes, I’d fear it. He has to do what he feels is appropriate for his career.”
We reported last month that David Beckham had an out clause in his LA Galaxy contract which can be triggered this October.
Yesterday, Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport confirmed the out clause rumor saying that Beckham can walk away from the Galaxy at the end of the year, his third in MLS.
Donovan, who led Major League Soccer with 20 goals last season, is scheduled to return to Los Angeles on March 8, two weeks ahead of the 2009 season opener against D.C. United at The Home Depot Center on March 22.
“I’ve appeared for a number of teams already,” Donovan told Bayern’s official website. “I can play football, and I know what has to be done out on the pitch. I’m ready for the challenge, and when my chance comes, I’ll take it.”
David Beckham lay the groundwork for him opting out of his contract with LA Galaxy next October during his introduction to the Italian media today.
Beckham said that he has missed playing football “at the highest level”. Specifically what he said was:
“But I have always said that I would always miss playing at the highest level. I’m not saying that in America they won’t get to the highest level – it will take time and it will happen. But with five months off during the season I personally can’t do that.
