Posted on August 23, 2008 - Filed Under LA Galaxy | Leave a Comment

Readers of this site know I have been harsh on Alexi Lalas in the past. Like here, here, and here. To get some closure, I am going to go ahead and write Alexi’s obituary as a GM in the hopes those who read it (i.e., MLS owners) will simply let his career as an executive rest in peace.

Alexi Lalas’s GM career (Jan. 2004 - Aug. 2008) was euthanized by AEG on August 11, 2008 after a long and painful bout with chronic underperformance.

Fresh on the heels of the news that former U.S. coach Bruce Arena has been handed the keys to the LA Galaxy came the announcement that Fernando Clavijo has resigned as Colorado Rapids head coach.

“A lot of things happened through the year that I was not happy with in many ways,” Clavijo told the Denver Post. “But I think because of family now I’ve decided it’s the right time to put all my energy into my family and recharged my batteries and myself, too.”

Assistant coach Gary Smith will take over as head coach for the rest of the season.

These are troubled times in Los Angeles as the flagship team the LA Galaxy has gone two months without a win.

Ives Galarcep had written a couple of posts here and here about the state of the Galaxy as has SI’s Jonah Freedman here.

Freedman reports that “A source close to Major League Soccer’s glamour franchise tells me that Tim Leiweke, president and CEO of Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns the Galaxy, made an unannounced visit to the team’s locker room this past week and issued a grim ultimatum: Get things on the right track in the next two weeks or there will be dire consequences.”

This weekend was a weekend of ties in Major League Soccer with the four games all ending up deadlocked.

New York 2 LA Galaxy 2
David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy needed a goal in extra time to tie the New York Red Bulls 2-2 on Saturday night before 46,754 fans, the largest crowd for a single Major League Soccer game this season.

It appeared as if Juan Pablo Angel’s goal in the 71st minute was going to be the game-winner for the Red Bulls. But the Galaxy’s Landon Donovan knocked in a bending shot in the 92nd minute for the game-tying score. It was his league-leading 12th goal of the season.

I turned on Sky Sports this morning and the lead headline was that the New England Revolutuon had beaten David Beckham and the L.A. Galaxy 2-1 in a battle of the top teams in MLS. I must admit, I almost fell of my chair when I saws the headline.

Here are the game summaries from this week’s MLS games.

New England 2, Los Angeles 1
Adam Cristman scored two goals as the New England Revolution held on for a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Friday. Cristman opened the scoring with an unassisted tally in the 33rd minute and then doubled the advantage four minutes later with his career-high sixth goal of the season to give the Revolution a 2-0 advantage.

A Three Way MLS Style

MLS Rumors  has the scoop on a potential blockbuster three-way trade between the Chicago Fire, LA Galaxy and Toronto FC.

The catalyst for the trade is U.S. star Brian  McBride. McBride was last seen keeping Fulham in the Premiership and now he wants to play in Major League Soccer, specifically Chicago. The problem is that Chicago doesn’t own the rights to McBride Toronto does.

What Toronto is looking for is a forward he can actually score. The problem is that Chicago does not have any of them. Enter the LA Galaxy where Carlos Ruiz is suddenly surplus material.
