Today’s was the MLS Re-Entry Draft, which is usually a pretty boring affair. But not this year as eight players were chosen. The biggest name being Juan Pablo Angel who went west to the Los Angeles Galaxy where Angel will be reunited with his former coach Bruce Arena.
Ángel, who scored 61 goals (including playoffs) in four seasons in New York, could line up a front line of Ángel and 2010 Best XI selection Edson Buddle, along with big names Landon Donovan and David Beckham in pursuit of a second consecutive Supporters’ Shield. With the Galaxy taking on Angel’s salary, that would appear to end any hopes of the Galaxy bringing Ronaldinho next summer. Read more... (440 words, 1 image, estimated 1:46 mins reading time)

It took a deflected goal in overtime, but the Colorado Rapids finally beat FC Dallas 2-1 to secure their first MLS Cup.
In the second half of overtime, Rapids substitute Macoumba Kandji took a long pass from Conor Casey, drove inside the box, beat a defender and stabbed the ball across the face of the Dallas goal. His shot spun off George John’s left thigh and over goalkeeper Kevin Hartman’s head. John was charged with an own goal.
“I don’t mind how they come,” Rapids coach Gary Smith said. “If they’re winners, it doesn’t matter. For somebody to score an own goal there must be some pressure, they must be under some pressure, to make that mistake.” Read more... (402 words, 1 image, estimated 1:36 mins reading time)
The MLS playoffs took a strange turn in the first round and many of the expected favorites for the semi-finals suffered shock defeats and are now out of the race for the MLS Cup. In fact three out of four of the matches ended with the better league record team losing to the underdog. The upsets likely will not please the league office considering the television ratings will likely take a small hit due to many stars heading home earlier then expected, but the better team won the match and deserves to continue on. But instead of Thierry Henry and Guillermo Barros Schelotto names being screamed this upcoming month expect to here of Chris Wondolowski and Conor Casey’s. Read more... A Pablo Mastroeni’s first-half goal gave the Colorado Rapids a 1-0 home win over Columbus Crew in the opening leg of their MLS Eastern Conference semifinal. The second leg is in Columbus on Saturday.
Colorado missed a great chance to go ahead in the 1-th minute when Cummings overhit a pass to Conor Casey on a two-on-one break in the 10th minute. Cummings then missed a second chance in the 21st minute, sliding a shot well wide of the left post. Read more... (226 words, 1 image, estimated 54 secs reading time)
New boys Philadephia Union were last night given a 2-0 drubbing by the Seattle Sounders in the inaugural MLS game at Seattle‘s Qwest Field. Philly‘s coach Peter Nowak was somehow to blame for the loss. Leaving seasoned midfielder Stefani Miglioranzi on the bench, Nowak opted to put Daniel Mwanga in Central defense a position that did not bring out his effectiveness entirely and which led to his substitution at the start of the second half.
However, the real games begin tonight with Colorado playing away to Chivas at 2230hrs. Of course Colorado hit the headlines these past 24 hrs when they off loaded players Nick LaBrocca and a third round draft pick to Toronto FC in exchange for the services of Marvell Wynne. After freshening up on my Colorado Rapids history, I have come to the realization that they are undoubtedly the worst side in MLS history. Despite being a founding member of the league, they have never won a trophy of any type. They did make it to two finals (1997 MLS Cup and 1999 US Open Cup), but they choked both times.
What has been their problem? Well, it sounds simple, but to win, you must score goals, and the Rapids hardly ever do so. Pablo Mastroeni has played in over 100 games for COL, but has only scored once. Paul Bravo and Chris Henderson were the only two real offensive threats this team has ever had. I don’t envy Gary Smith’s job one bit. Read more... (246 words, 1 image, estimated 59 secs reading time)

Recap: The Rapids season started hot, then cooled off for a long time. They eventually got it going again, but it was too late and they finished with a losing record, just outside of the postseason. Even more troubling, their poor play caused their attendance numbers to dip. It was a tough year, so COL gets a C for 2008.
Offense: Contrary to previous seasons, the Rapids had a good offensive year, scoring 44 goals to tie with the Fire for fifth in the league. Terry Cooke showed that he still serves one of the best crosses in the West (maybe better than Becks) and Conor Casey started delivering on his promise. Overall, they get a B for offense.
