Arsenal Wins In FA Cup

by David on January 19, 2011

Arsenal beat Leeds 3-1 to move to the fourth round of the FA Cup. Samir Nasri, Bacary Sagna and Robin van Persie were the Arsenal scorers, and the Gunners will now play Huddlesfield on Jan. 30 at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal got off to a dream start when Nasri scored his 14th goal of the season after only five minutes. Arshavin played a key role in the move (one of the few things he did all night), with Chamakh stepping over his pass to allow Nasri to dance through and slip the ball to the side of Kasper Schmeichel.

Napoli, Sevilla and Manchester City were all big winners in domestic cup ties tonight.

Sevilla are through to the Copa del Rey semi-finals after wrapping up a 6-3 aggregate victory against Villarreal. The Liga rivals drew 3-3 in the first leg of their last-eight tie, but it was Gregorio Manzano’s side who took charge of the second leg. Renato gave the hosts the lead after just seven minutes, with Frédéric Kanouté and Alexis putting them out of reach.

Wembley StadiumManchester United are through to the fourth round of the FA Cup after a 1-0 home win against ten-man Liverpool, while  Tottenham and Chelsea easily progrssed against lower league sides.

Liverpool’s trip to Old Trafford marked the return of manager Kenny Dalglish as a replacement for the departed Roy Hodgson in the away dugout, but the Scot’s second tenure at the club got off to the worst possible start when his side conceded a penalty with less than a minute played. Daniel Agger’s foul on Dimitar Berbatov earned Ryan Giggs the opportunity to put the hosts ahead.

Newcastle was shocked by League Two side Stevenage in the FA Cup third-round as they were one of four Premier League sides knocked out of the cup at the hands of lowly opposition.

Despite Newcastle making five changes from the side that routed West Ham in midweek, it was still a strong side that went down 3-1 at Stevenage. While Stevenage is 15th in League Two, Newcastle is eighth in the Premier League.

Sunderland’s 2-1 loss to third-tier Notts County allowed Paul Ince to prevail over former Manchester United teammate Steve Bruce, whose Sunderland side was sixth in the topflight. Craig Westcarr and Lee Hughes scored for Notts County before Darren Bent pulled one back from the penalty spot for Sunderland, which rested several first-team regulars.

FA Cup Third Round Preview

by David on January 7, 2011

Welcoming the FA Cup Final Team HomeThis weekend we get a break from the Premier League, for what I consider to be the best cup tournament in the world; the FA Cup. The third round is always interesting as the clubs in the Premier League and Championship come in and play teams from the lower divisions. It is here that we get those remarkable upsets that the FA Cup is famous for.

Here is a look at some of the games this weekend:

Match of the Week: Manchester United v Liverpool
The two most successful teams in English football meet at Old Trafford in what could well be the last game in charge for Liverpool’s Roy Hodgson.

Watch for the headbutt!Germany just lost its captain.  Michael Ballack played in the FA Cup final for Chelsea this weekend in a 4-0 beatdown of Portsmouth.  However, if you’ve seen the photographs, Kevin Boateng–I hate the hyphenation in his name–crushed Ballack’s foot in a pretty hideous-looking tackle while Portsmouth was getting destroyed and now Germany has no captain.

I guess the worst part is that he actually sustained an ankle injury while Boateng was stepping on his foot.  Um, ouch!

The Germans know they’re cooked–which sucks:

Owen Hargreaves caught the smackdown from Alex Ferguson after Hargreaves said he still wants to play for England at the World Cup.  This kind of goes hand-in-hand with the idea that bowing out of tournaments early gives you more time to focus on league matches that you still have control over.  However, I don’t know if this is exactly the same because what we’re seeing is a guy who wants to play for country just being honest about it.

More Misery For Rafa

by David on January 13, 2010

It is no longer a big surprise when Liverpool looses, considering they have lost 10 of their last 20 games.
But for a side already out of the Champions League and the title race, the FA Cup promised the best chance for silverware this season for Liverpool fans.

To add injury to insult for Rafa Benitez, he saw lost both Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres to injuries during the first half.

This is why the FA Cup is the best domestic club tournament in the world. It gives smaller clubs the opportunity to play the big teams, and to sometimes upset them.

Jermaine Beckford’s first-half goal gave third-tier Leeds United a 1-0 victory over bitter rivals Manchester united as Sir Alex Ferguson suffered his first FA Cup third-round defeat since taking the reins at Man United in 1986.

Beckford caused Wes Brown and Jonny Evans problems all game, and was rewarded when he latched onto Johnny Howson’s long pass in the first half and steered his shot across Tomasz Kuszczak.

Jamie Carragher has now called for “character” to be shown in Anfield after another disappointing loss by the Reds this weekend.  Like the title says, I don’t mean to harp on Liverpool but this is a club that not too many years ago won the Champion’s League in a shootout and now they can’t seem to buy a goal.

Liverpool is in 7th in the Premier League and they are double-digit points behind Chelsea (who is in first place.)
