Euros

Good draw for England in the Euro 2012 as they have been drawn against Ukraine, France and Sweden. It is by now way an easy group for England, but considering who England could have been drawn against, Fabio Capello cannot be too upset.

In every tournament there is a proverbial “Group of Death” and Euro 2012 is no exception. Group B which contains Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Portugal is horrible with one of Holland, Germany and Portugal going home early.

The Republic of Ireland did not get any favours in their draw as they meet Spain, Italy and Croatia. Really big ask to see ROI advance from that group.

Wayne Rooney is often considered one of England‘s brightest talents, however, there is one thing that stands in his way of following in the footsteps of fellow legends Allan Shearer and Paul Gascoigne -  his temper.

After last month’s horror lash out on Miodrag Dzudovic during the 2-2 draw with Montenegro in a Euro 2012 qualifier, it became apparent that Rooney has a problem handling his anger.

Of course his action on the night saw him banned for England’s3 opening  group fixtures. However, after receiving a statement from UEFA earlier this week, The FA are considering appealing to the governing body on behalf of the striker for a reduced ban.

Real Madrid are on the verge of the Champions League knockout phase after opening up a five-point lead in Group D on a night when a poor Bayern Munich display saw them miss a chance to open up a gap on Napoli. Elsewhere Inter Milan and Benfica moved to the top of their respective groups.

Madrid have yet to drop a point this season in the Champions League and they comfortably beat Lyon 4-0 at the Bernabéu tonight. A win in the return leg on 2 November will see Real Madrid qualify for the knockout stages with two games to play. In the other group match, Ajax moved into second place with a 2-0 win over Dynamo Zagreb.

Rooney banned for three Matches

by David on October 13, 2011

England striker Wayne Rooney will miss the Euro 2012 group stage after being banned for three matches for his sending off against Montenegro.

Uefa’s disciplinary panel, which described the incident as an “assault”, decided on the punishment at a meeting on Thursday. The England FA are said to be considering an appeal.

The official UEFA statement read:

The UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body has today handed down a three-match suspension to England forward Wayne Rooney following his dismissal during the UEFA EURO 2012 qualifier in Montenegro last Friday, 7 October.

England have qualified for the Euro 2012 finals after a 2-2 draw in Montenegro. A match that saw England throw away a two-goal lead and have Wayne Rooney sent off, a dismissal that means Rooney will miss at least one group match at next years Euros.

England got off to a great start when they scored after only 11 minutes when Rooney released Walcott on the right, with the Arsenal winger teeing up Young to head his fourth international goal from close range. Twenty minutes later it was 2-0 England. This time Young was the provider, surging into the area and playing Bent in for a simple finish.

England became the seventh team to qualify for EURO 2012 on Friday on a night when Russia and Greece took huge steps towards joining them and the likes of Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina ensured top-two finishes.

Last month holders Spain and former European champions Italy, the Netherlands and Germany ensured their finals berths alongside co-hosts Poland and Ukraine, and to that number can be added England after their 2-2 draw in Montenegro settled Group G. Montenegro came from two down and have booked a play-off spot as runners-up, with Switzerland unable to catch them after losing 2-0 in Wales.

Robbie KeaneEuro 2012 qualification games continued today and their were bug victories for Russia, Greece and Denmark, while Robbie Keane set a new Ireland scoring record.

Group B
All six teams in Group B were in action today and Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp must have been wondering why all his forwards suddenly found their scoring touch after the Premier League season ended! Russia came from a goal behind to beat Armenia 3-1 behind a hat-trick from Spurs striker Roman Pavlyuchenko Slovakia joined them on 13 points after a 1-0 win at home to Andorra, Miroslav Karhan grabbing the only goal. Finally, Republic of Ireland became the third side to reach 13 points following their 2-0 away win against FYR Macedonia. Robbie Keane scored both goals, while the hosts missed a penalty, to ensure Giovanni Trapattoni’s hopes of reaching next summer’s tournament remained strong. The Irish now top the group on goals scored from Russia, with Slovakia third.

England fell behind 2-0 to Switzerland before recovering to draw the match at Wembley. Luckily for England, Montenegro were held 1-1 by Bulgaria so both sides remain level at the top of Group G, six points ahead of Switzerland.

Switzerland, needed a win if they were to have any hope of reaching Euro 2012m and they came out and attacked England from the opening whistle.Twice Joe Hart was forced into saves in the opening eight minutes, the second a smart readjustment to keep out Gökhan Inler’s deflected drive.

Group A
Germany edged Austria 2-1 in a much-anticipated Northern European classic in Vienna. Mario Gomez opened the scoring in the 44th minute, only to see the lead cancelled out when Arne Friedrich put through his own net. Gomez completed an impressive night with a winner to stun the home crowd in the 90th minute. The Austrians remain in fourth place while Belgium and Turkey are in second and third respectively following their 1-1 draw.
