AC Milan Keeper Abbiati Out For Champions League Clash

AC Milan goal keeper Christian Abbiati is out for at least three weeks with a thigh strain meaning he is doubtful for that Oct. 19th Champions League match against Real Madrid according to a statement made by the thirty three year old’s club on their official website.

The statement regarding Abbiati’s injury over the weekend during the side’s 1-0 win at Parma read:

Abbiati will return to play in 15 to 20 days’ time. Abbiati has a strain in the adductor muscle on his right thigh.

The good news for the Serie A powerhouse side is that Abbiati will get this weekend to rest as all major leagues take a small break for international football, but the bad news for the injured goalie is that once play resumes in mid-October the side will have a string of critical matches that the keeper likely will not make it back in time to participate in.

As I stated earlier, AC Milan plays in the Champions League match of the opening round when they face off with Real Madrid on the 19th of October. Milan currently trails Los Blancos by two points in the group table and need to colect at least a point in the critical road match. And three days before that Serie A football resumes with a critical home match against Chievo.

Abbiati is expected to return sometime around the 25th of October at the latest and would make it just in time for the fourth place side’s away fixture with Napoli. But considering that the keeper has a painful strain his window for return is really unknown, but it seems to be a minor strain at least in its diagnosis.

Marco Amelia, a transferred player on loan from Genoa, will replace Abbiati in between the posts.
