Barcelona and Manchester United Play to 0-0 Draw
Posted on April 24, 2008 - Filed Under Europe | 3 Comments
In the first leg of the Champions League semifinals Barcelona and Manchester United played to a 0-0 draw. Manchester United had a golden opportunity in the 3rd minute, but Cristiano Ronaldo missed a crucial penalty shot. Swiss referee Massimo Busacca called for the penalty after Ronaldo was fouled in the box, despite protests from the Barcelona players and fans. Ronaldo stepped up to take the kick and missed entirely, which would have given Man U a 1-0 lead and a precious away goal.

US vs Argentina - Is it sold out?
Posted on April 23, 2008 - Filed Under Tickets | 1 Comment
Are tickets for the U.S vs Argentina game officially sold out? Tickets went on sale last week (April 14th) and I expected them to sell out quickly since it is not every day you get to see the No-1 team in the world play with a full squad.
I am little surprised that Ticketmaster or US Soccer have announced that all tickets are sold out, but after spending time on the Ticketmaster site this week, I cannot find any seats available.

Chelsea versus Liverpool Review
Posted on April 23, 2008 - Filed Under Europe | 2 Comments
Last nights Liverpool versus Chelsea UEFA Champions League Semi-Final was not the most exciting game of the season, but it does open up some interesting questions for the weekend and the next weeks match at Stamford Bridge.
For Liverpool, John Arne Riise has certainly put them on the back foot of this tie. Al Chelsea needs is a draw to advance. But I always expected that Liverpool would need to score at Stamford Bridge anyway, so the own goal does not change a lot of things here. The big winner in the Liverpool vs. Chelsea war is Birmingham. Liverpool plays Birmingham on Saturday and is sure to rest most of its players ahead of the second leg next Wednesday. Birmingham is in a fight for its life at the bottom of the table and suddenly Saturday’s game gives them a chance to pick up some much needed points.

Wild Start in the MLS Eastern Conference
Posted on April 22, 2008 - Filed Under MLS | 2 Comments
Kansas City in first place? D.C. United in last place? Toronto FC on a 2 game winning streak? Those are the facts and even though the MLS season is still very young there have been many surprises in the Eastern Conference.
Many people picked D.C. United to be the Eastern Conference representative in the MLS Finals with all the off-season acquisitions that the team made. So much press was given to United that it seemed they were the only team that made any moves. Well, so far in the young season those moves have not translated to success. United is in last place with only 3 points and sports a record of 1-3-0. 3 losses already and they have lost two in a row, losing to Columbus 2-1 at home and getting embarrassed 4-0 against Real Salt Lake. Their only win was against lowly Toronto.

Look Out For Toronto!

Toronto FC wins home opener and their 2nd in a row beating Real Salt Lake 1-0.
In the games only goal Laurent Robert sent a scorching shot that found the back of the net in the 31st minute on a free kick deflection. Robert, who is from France and played for Derby in the English Premier League last season, gave Toronto the 1-0 lead, which would stick and be the final score. When asked about the goal after the game Robert said, “The free kick for me was very lucky as it was so close to the goal, only 16 yards away. I knew the wall would jump so I hit it hard and was very lucky that it deflected in.”

Doc Brown’s 2014 U.S. World Cup Roster
Posted on April 19, 2008 - Filed Under MLS | 2 Comments
Hey Marty, Doc Brown here. Back from the future this time. 2014 to be exact. Things are generally good there. Still no cure for that raging case of herpes though bud, sorry. I’ll keep looking.
Marty, what I want to talk to you today about is the future of the U.S. Men’s National Soccer team. Now, you don’t need a fancy sports almanac from the future to know the U.S. national team’s stock it rising, albeit gradually.
But, Great Scott, Marty! Did you know that by 2014 the U.S. will actually be able to contend for the most coveted trophy in the world? No, not the Nobel Prize for Physics, the freaking FIFA World Cup.

Alexi Lalas Likes Older Men

So, if you’re Alexi Lalas and you are desperately trying to save your job, what do you do now? Your team just lost to the lowly Reds, and they didn’t just lose, they gave up three goals to MLS’s most anemic offense. (sans SJE, who are so bad, if you’ve noticed, they are the only team without its own category @ STO!)

Columbus Crew beats D.C. United 2-1 on Own Goal
Posted on April 18, 2008 - Filed Under MLS | 1 Comment
On Thursday evening D.C. United’s slow start to the season continued, as they were beaten 2-1 by the Columbus Crew. United also lost in front of their home fans, who are starting to grumble because of the high expectations of the team after all the off season acquisitions. To add salt to the wound, not only for the team but for the fans as well, Columbus won the game on an own goal by United.
