Scottish Premier side St Mirren have agreed a deal to sign midfielder Andy Dorman from New England Revolution on an 18-month contract. Chester-born Dorman moved to the United States in 2000 and graduated from Boston University before beginning his professional career in Major League Soccer with New England.
St Mirren manager Gus MacPherson told the club’s official website:
“I’m glad to confirm that everything is now signed and sealed with Andy Dorman - he will be a St Mirren player in a few days’ time. Andy has agreed to an 18-month contract with the option of a further year at the end of that. “All that needs to be concluded is international clearance - we have requested that and it is now in the hands of the MLS in the USA to push the clearance through.”
We are less than 90 days away from the opening of the 2008 MLS season. For some reason MLS has not released the full schedule yet, but they have announced the following games in early April.
The April schedule includes the LA Galaxy and New York Red Bulls home opener and an early match up between bitter rivals Houston and FC Dallas.
We are less than 90 days away from the opening of the 2008 MLS season. The season kicks off on March 29thwith 4 games including a rematch of the 2007 MLS Cup between the Houston Dynamo and the New England Revolution.
The March schedule is as follows:
It is not too soon to be thinking about the MLS all-star game in Toronto next July. The MLS All-Star format typically pits the best of the North American league against a European team. In the past three years, Chelsea and Fulham of the English Premier League and Celtic of the Scottish Premier League have appeared.
Those British teams pale in terms of quality and/or pedigree with the names being banded about for this years event. any of the four now being considered. It appears that MLS is involved in talks with England’s Liverpool FC, Germany’s Bayern Munich and Spain’s FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, according to the Toronto Star.
Oursportscentral had an interesting article on who will get MLS franchises next. From the post:
Major League Soccer: St. Louis and Philadelphia are considered the top choices for the league’s 16th franchise that is expected to be announced early in 2008. The league hopes the selected location would be able to start play in 2009 when a Seattle team is set to join. The MLS reportedly will expand to 18 teams by 2010 or 2011 and recently announced investors for a possible Atlanta franchise and a second franchise in the New York City area. The league was also talking with the city of Miami about funding for a soccer stadium that could be part of a project with a Florida Marlins baseball stadium on the current site of the Orange Bowl. Kansas City officials recently approved a special tax incentive for a redevelopment plan in the Bannister Mall area that is to include a new soccer stadium for the Kansas City Wizards.
Well at the end of super Sunday in England, Arsenal and Manchester United solidified there positions as the top two teams in the country. When the dust had settled after two intriguing games the table looks like this:
Although it was rumored that DC United were after LA Galaxy keeper Joe Cannon it seems that they have settled on Houston Dynamo’s keeper Zach Wells instead.
This week D.C. United traded defender Bobby Boswell to the Dynamo for goalkeeper Zach Wells and a conditional 2009 draft pick. Wells will replace DC United keeper Troy Perkins who is being sold to a Scandinavian club. Expect to see an announcement soon on that deal.
When Perkins leaves that will make 3 DC starters who have left already this off- season after midfielder Brian Carroll was selected by San Jose in the expansion draft before quickly being traded to Columbus.
I read in the Boston Globe today that DC United is in negotiations with Juan Sebastian Veron for next season at a cool price of $4 million a year. Veron who failed miserably in England and is now 32 years of age. My opinion is that that they over the hill former superstars is not the path that MLS should be taking.
Another aging player that the Galaxy is reportedly targeting is Celtic forward Maciej Zurawski. Zurawski, who is 31 years old, cannot make the starting lineup at Celtic. Yet he is supposedly the forward that the Galaxy needs to convert all those Beckham crosses.
In putting together my top 5 soccer players of all-time my only criteria was that in order to be considered, the player had to be retired. That is why someone like Ronaldinho is not on the list. I consider myself very fortunate to have had the privilege of seeing all 5 players on the list live and in person.
The players are in order of who I think was the best.Disagree with the list? Add who you think should be on this list in the comments section or leave a comment if disagree with a pick.
The MLS season kicks off March 29, 2008, a week earlier than last season, which opened April 7, 2007.
“When you see the first few games already on the schedule, you realize the season is not that far off,” said Head Coach Mo Johnston. “We’ll head to Columbus, then off to D.C. - then we’ll take a week to get ready for our home opener against Salt Lake. I’m looking forward to it, and I’m sure our fans are as well.”
